Gardner Calls on China & 20 Additional Countries to Cease Diplomatic and Economic Ties with North Korea

Urges United Nations to Expel North Korea

Washington, D.C.– Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO), Chairman of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity, today sent a letter to Ambassadors of nations maintaining diplomatic ties with North Korea, calling to “cease all official diplomatic and economic relations with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).” In the letter, Gardner also calls on the United Nations to expel the DPRK from the international body, as the United Nations General Assembly begins in New York today. The countries included are those that still maintain Embassies and other diplomatic facilities in the DPRK.

In the letter, Gardner writes, “Now is the time to diplomatically and economically isolate this regime, until it fully and irreversibly commits to peaceful denuclearization.  Maintaining official diplomatic relations with a regime that continues to defy international law and threaten nations across the globe only serves to reward nefarious behavior.”

Gardner has been the Senate’s leading voice on the DPRK and recently introduced bipartisan legislation that would impose a U.S. economic embargo against any entity that does business with the DPRK or assists in its labor trafficking abuses.

Gardner sent the first letter to Cui Tiankai, China’s Ambassador to the United States. Gardner will also send identical copies of the letter to Ambassadors to the United States from Brazil, the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Cuba, Czech Republic, Egypt, Germany, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Russia, Sweden, and Vietnam.

Your Excellency:

I write to respectfully urge your government to immediately cease all official diplomatic and economic relations with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), including immediately closing all of your diplomatic facilities in the DPRK.  The DPRK is an imminent and growing threat to global peace and stability.  The United Nations Security Council has repeatedly condemned DPRK’s illicit activities and has imposed sanctions against this outlaw regime, most recently under United Nations Security Council Resolution 2375, adopted on September 11, 2017. 

Now is the time to diplomatically and economically isolate this regime, until it fully and irreversibly commits to peaceful denuclearization. Maintaining official diplomatic relations with a regime that continues to defy international law and threaten nations across the globe only serves to reward nefarious behavior.

In addition to cutting off bilateral ties, I urge your government to support expelling the DPRK from the United Nations.  Article 6 of the United Nations Charter states: “A Member of the United Nations which has persistently violated the Principles contained in the present Charter may be expelled from the Organization by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council.”  There is no nation on Earth that deserves this dishonor more than the DPRK.

I ask your government to support these necessary and important steps to isolate this belligerent regime.
