Deer Trail football at Cripple Creek delayed again; game to resume tomorrow

    by Steven Vetter, Managing Editor

DEER TRAIL — The Deer Trail Eagles will have to wait another day before resuming their early September game at Cripple Creek-Victor.

The red-and-white was supposed to make the trip back to the historic gaming town yesterday to resume the game but weather prevented the trip from happening. As a result, the game will restart tomorrow at 2 p.m.

When the game was first postponed early last month, the Eagles were up on the Pioneers 31-14 with about 9 minutes left to go in the third quarter. Several lightning delays pushed the game too late and it was suspended because of darkness and the lack of lights at the Cripple Creek field.

The red-and-white received their first win of the season this past Friday via forfeit from Cheraw.

Lady Indians seeded No. 3; host 3A regional bracket Saturday

    by Steven Vetter, Managing Editor

STRASBURG — The Strasburg Lady Indians concluded their season with a 3-2 victory at Eaton Oct. 7 and in the process won another league title; however, the red-and-black enter the 3A softball postseason seeded third, behind Brush and Eaton.

The Colorado High School Activities Association released its softball tournament brackets earlier this morning, including eight three-team brackets in the 3A classification. All 3A regional action is slated for Saturday with Strasburg (15-4 on the year) expected to play about 12:15 p.m. against the winner of a 10 a.m. game between Sterling (9-9) and Montezuma-Cortez (9-10-1).

In most cases the top eight seeds host regionals, but this year has two sites that are hosted by lower-seeded teams because they won their conference titles. La Junta is seeded No. 6 but will play at 11th-seeded Limon. No. 8 seeded University must travel to Meeker for its regional tournament.

All 3A regional pairings are below:

DENVER NUGGET KENNETH FARIED & LUPUS RESEARCH ALLIANCE HOSTED A SLAM DUNK EVENT — SEPT 23

DENVER— The Lupus Research Alliance, the world’s largest private funder of innovative lupus research, partnered with Denver Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried for the inaugural Slam Dunk Against Lupus (SDAL) event held on Saturday, Sept. 23,  at the University of Denver’s Magness Arena inside the Ritchie Center.

Faried, whose mother is afflicted with lupus, will host the event with 100% of the proceeds going directly to the Lupus Research Alliance to help fund scientific discoveries to better treat, prevent and cure lupus. Lupus is a challenging autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks instead of protects the body’s own tissues and organs.

Ticket holders joined Faried, other professional athletes, and celebrities for an afternoon filled with sports, entertainment, prizes, philanthropy, and fun, with 100% of proceeds going to Lupus research.

The event raised $49,550.00, almost half of its $125,000 goal

The events included Kids slam dunk contest with NBA players serving as judges, a Performance by Denver Nuggets Elevation Dunk Squad & Drumline, Half-court shooting contest for a grand prize, Nuggets mascot Rocky and other interactive entertainment, Drawings throughout the day for special prizes and unique, fun activities, and Three-point shooting contests with students.

Because the Lupus Research Alliance’s Board of Directors fund all administrative and fundraising costs, 100% of all donations goes to support lupus research programs.

Join Colorado Parks and Wildlife — Sept. 26 — A Public Meeting On Its Future

Hunting, Fishing, and Outdoor Rec… Cut Off?

Attend a Public Meeting — Sept. 26 — To discuss the uncertain future of Management Agency Colorado Parks & Wildlife…

DENVER – Michelle Zimmerman, the Parks and Wildlife Commissioner, will be hosting a public forum meeting in Denver to discuss the uncertain future of wildlife and outdoor recreation management. CPW’s Northeast Regional Manager, Mark Leslie, will join Michelle for a presentation on the financial challenges facing the agency.

With our recent and expected population growth, we recognize that Colorado’s future is highly connected to the sustainability of parks and natural resources, the availability of open spaces and trails, the conservation of wildlife, and ultimately, to the health of the agency responsible for their management. — Michelle Zimmerman, Parks and Wildlife Commissioner

Earlier this year, a CPW financial sustainability bill passed the Colorado House but failed in a Senate committee. While CPW is an enterprise agency that relies on sportsmen and park users to provide funding for core programs, it still requires an act of the legislature to increase CPW’s prices. In order to avoid anticipated budget shortfalls, CPW is looking at multiple revenue generating concepts. Since 2009, CPW has lost 50 wildlife related positions and cut $40 million from its wildlife operating budget. Permanent park employees have been cut by 5%, and the temporary parks workforce by 10%. Parks and wildlife managers caution that additional cuts are inevitable without an increase in revenue.

Colorado’s natural resources and wildlife are under increasing pressure from a growing human population. This agency has done its best to manage resources, but now we need to find effective ways to increase revenue to meet future challenges and opportunities. This is an important discussion we must have with our constituents. — Mark Leslie, Northeast Regional Manager for CPW

Free to Breathe 5K Run/Walk Set for Sunday, October 1 — Funds Lung Cancer Research

Denver Locals Rally to Support Innovative Research and Double Survival

Denver, CO – Hundreds of local residents are joining forces to fight lung cancer, united in the belief that surviving lung cancer should be the expectation, not the exception. The Denver Free to Breathe 5K Run/Walk will take place Sunday, October 1 at Washington Park (701 South Franklin Street, Denver, CO 80209). All proceeds from the event support Free to Breathe, a lung cancer research and advocacy organization dedicated to increasing lung cancer survival.

By fundraising and joining us on event day, you are bringing hope to those affected by the disease and their families. Lung cancer claims more lives each year than breast, colon and prostate cancer combined, yet these three cancers receive more research funding. More treatment options are needed, and the innovative research we’re funding through the fundraising efforts of our community can help ensure everyone diagnosed with the disease has a fighting chance. — volunteer Leanna Whitcher of Castle Pines

The Free to Breathe events community has raised over $16 million to support groundbreaking research and educational programs since 2005. Funds raised support life saving lung cancer research, promote access to clinical trials while building and empowering the lung cancer community.

Last year, community members, teams, and companies across the region supported the Denver Free to Breathe 5K Run/Walk by raising over $75,000. Event chairs hope to surpass that total in 2017, which will go a long way in supporting programs specifically designed to ensure that more patients become survivors. Every dollar counts to the more than 224,000 people diagnosed in the U.S with lung cancer each year. People who have never smoked account for between 20,000 and 30,000 of lung cancer diagnoses every year. In Colorado alone, an estimated 2,420 residents will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2017.

This year’s event will feature a 5K Run/Walk. The day will also include music from a local DJ, a variety of kids’ activities and fun for the whole family. Special recognition will be given to top finishers and fundraisers. Gather your squad, and join us for an inspiring day focused on doubling lung cancer survival. Cherry Creek State Park

    Sept. 23-24

DENVER – Colorado Parks and Wildlife will host the first-ever Outdoor Adventure Expo at Cherry Creek State Park, Saturday and Sunday, September 23 and 24. With three outdoor activity areas, this premiere event will introduce you to all the agency has to offer at our 41 beautiful parks and 300-plus state wildlife areas.

Why would you want to live in Colorado, if not to enjoy the outdoors? That’s why I do what I do for CPW. Being outdoors has helped my family get closer and gain skills that build confidence. When I take a mom shooting with her son, or help a granddad catch the first fish with his grandson, I get a reward that can’t be beat. — Bryan Posthumus, Northeast Region Hunting and Angling Outreach Coordinator and Outdoor Recreation Area Lead

At the Outdoor Adventure Expo, you can sample the most popular recreation activities in Colorado in one place, over one weekend. You can try archery, biking, fishing, paddleboarding, rock climbing, sailing, shooting and more! Entry to the event will be free and attendees will enjoy food trucks, shuttle rides, and a wide array of outdoor recreation exhibitors and vendors who will share their expertise, safety tips and passion for getting outside.

This year’s event is sponsored by Shikar Safari International and Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO). Shikar Safari International supports educational projects related to wildlife management, hunting and shooting. GOCO invests a portion of Colorado Lottery proceeds to help preserve and enhance the state’s parks, trails, wildlife, rivers and open spaces. Additional support for the event has been provided by Bass Pro Shops, the Colorado Lottery, Colorado Tourism Office, and Waste Management.

The Colorado Wildlife Council (CWC), a group of avid sportsmen, will also be in attendance unveiling its first (of two) origami dollar bill wildlife statue as part of its statewide education campaign, Hug A Hunter. The statue, a life-size origami elk, was built by Colorado sculptor, Dwayne Cranford, to educate Coloradans on where the money from hunting and fishing license fees goes: directly to Colorado’s wildlife, public lands and economy. CWC’s campaign, Hug a Hunter, strives to inform Coloradans that sportsmen have an irreplaceable impact on the health of our state’s abundant wildlife and natural resources due to licensing fees from hunting and fishing. The fall Hug a Hunter television and digital campaigns launched on September 11 and will conclude on November 17. To learn more about the campaign, visit www.HugaHunter.com.

  • Miller prepares to face his favorite target in Rivers

Miller prepares to face his favorite target in Rivers

    by Arnie Stapleton

    AP Pro Football Writer

DENVER (AP) _ Von Miller has sacked Philip Rivers more than any other quarterback in the NFL. That’s not why he’s delighted to open the season Monday night when the Los Angeles Chargers visit the Denver Broncos.

“I like playing them all. I like sacking them all,” said Miller, whose 731/2 sacks since his rookie 2011 season rank second in the league.

“That’s my job. It’s not like I’m going against Alex Smith and I’m like, `Man, I wish I was playing Philip Rivers this week.”’

Who could blame him if he did?

Of the 34 quarterbacks Miller has sacked in his career, Rivers is his biggest prize.

He’s sacked him 13 times. Smith, by the way, ranks second on his list with eight, followed by Tom Brady with 71/2.

Monday night marks Rivers’ 24th game against the Broncos. Before Miller entered the league as the second overall draft pick in 2011, Rivers owned the Broncos. Since then, Miller has owned Rivers.

    Rivers’ stats pre-Miller: 8 wins, 3 losses, 184 for 283 (65 percent) for 2,624 yards, 18 TDs, 6 interceptions, 20 sacks.

    Rivers’ stats post-Miller: 3 wins, 9 losses, 248 for 423 (58 percent) for 2,680 yards, 18 TDs, 16 interceptions, 37 sacks.

Miller certainly has gotten Rivers’ attention over the years.

“He’ll be remembered as one of the best ever to play,” Rivers said. “And I still find myself rewinding the tape, not only on the pass downs but on the run downs. That’s what pushes him a notch above. He is unreal against the run. He plays on every down all he’s got and it’s impressive.”

That’s because Miller has grown accustomed to facing defenses designed specifically to keep him off the quarterback.

“In the National Football League, if a team doesn’t want you to get a sack, that’s top on their agenda, that’s their primary goal — don’t let Von get a sack, don’t let him ruin the game — 90 percent of the time, it’s not going to happen,” Miller said.

“You have to find other ways to change the game. You have to find other ways to impact the game.”

While Miller has openly talked about obliterating the NFL record with a 30-sack season, what he really aims for is disruption.

“I really just try to go out there and try to be a dominant football player. I try to affect the game any way that I can whether coverage, playing the run or rushing the passer,” Miller said. “Whatever chances I can get to wreck the game, that’s what I’m going to try to do.”

After winning the Super Bowl 50 MVP award, Miller went on a world tour of talk shows and dance halls while mired in a contract stalemate with the Broncos that ended with his record-setting $114.5 million deadline deal.

Then he went out and got 131/2 sacks and for most of the season looked like a lock for his first NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.

But he was held without a sack over the final month of the season and Oakland’s Khalil Mack edged him by a single vote.

“I didn’t really have to feel bad for him,” Shane Ray said. “Von pushes himself. He said OK, last year what I did wasn’t good enough — as great as his season was last year.

“So, he’s pushed himself all offseason to come back and be even better, so now you can’t deny him. Be so good that they can’t deny you.”

Instead of jetting all over the globe, Miller went to work reshaping his body. He hosted a pass rushing summit for fellow elite edge rushers at Stanford over the summer, and he showed up at training camp with a renewed focus.

“He’s always worked hard but there’s a different intensity to the way he works now,” Shaq Barrett said. “And he’s trying to separate himself from the pack.”

Barrett suspects he has Mack’s one-vote victory to thank.

“I wouldn’t know but if it was me personally, I would use that as fuel for the fire for sure,” Barrett said.

Miller took on more of a leadership role following DeMarcus Ware’s retirement.

He signed every single day for fans at training camp, stayed in shape by returning punts and even running behind the real punt returners for extra exercise, and he earned the first captainship of his seven-year NFL career.

“Every single game is a huge opportunity, a huge blessing and I love going out there and playing them all,” Miller said.

“The player’s the same, it doesn’t matter about weather, location or any of that stuff. When the lights turn on Sundays or Mondays, I’m ready to go and I’m excited.”
