Attorney General Coffman Urges Coloradans to Donate Wisely in Wake of Hurricane Harvey

Don’t compound a disaster by throwing your charitable dollars away

Denver – Colorado Attorney General Cynthia H. Coffman is urging consumers to do their homework before responding to a solicitation for money to help victims of Hurricane Harvey and the widespread flooding in southern Texas. Natural and man-made disasters always give rise to fake charity and other donation scams.

“Coloradans are extremely generous, and I know many people, myself included, are watching the tragedy unfold in Texas and are looking for ways to help,” said Attorney General Coffman. “It is important to take a few quick steps to ensure that these needed donations are really going to victims or to organizations providing victim and community support.”

    ·     Research the charity before you donate. Ask for detailed information about the organization including name, address, telephone number, licensing information, and percentage of your donation that will go to the charity. Search online for substantiating information as well as for their reputation using services like www.ChecktheCharity.com, the BBB Wise Giving Alliance at www.give.org, or others.

    ·     Be especially wary of brand-new charities and crowdfunding sites that have popped up as a result of this tragic event. Even if they are well-intentioned, they may not have the necessary infrastructure to provide relief or services to the victims.

    ·     Do not respond to unsolicited solicitations that that arrive by phone, email, pop-up messages, or even door-to-door.

    ·     Avoid charities or fundraisers that refuse to provide detailed information about their identity, mission, costs, or how your donation will be used.

    ·     Know that not all donations are tax-deductible—donations to specific individuals or families, for example, are not. If someone raising money on behalf of a particular victim or family says your donation is tax-deductible, chances are it’s a scam.

    ·     Charity Navigator is useful for gathering information about existing charities and has a Hurricane Harvey specific section.

For more information about charity fraud, please visit the Charity Fraud Center. If you believe you have been a victim of charity fraud, you can file a report here or call 1-800-222-4444.

  • TRAFFIC ADVISORY – UPDATED

Expect delays on US 85 northbound at Colorado State Highway 7 in Adams Country through Friday morning, Sept. 1

Traffic will be restricted to one lane on US 85 northbound at Colorado State Highway 7 through 6 am, Friday, Sept. 1, for pavement repair work on the bridge deck.

Crews are rehabilitating the bridge deck on US 85 northbound, requiring a single lane closure through early Friday.  Motorists should prepare for delays.

While work is scheduled to take place during off-peak travel times (nights and early mornings), crews found the pavement surface on this stretch of US 85 northbound to be deteriorating rapidly and needs immediate permanent repairs that will take a longer time to fix.  By Friday morning, work should be completed with both lanes open to traffic.

The work is part of a $10.2 million project to resurface and repair pavement and bridges on US 85 from Interstate 76 to 168th Avenue.  Other improvements include guardrail and cable barrier installation, and updating traffic signals, signing, and striping.

These updates will significantly improve travel safety along this corridor.

  • Secretary Williams reminds hurricane donors to check the charity

Secretary Williams reminds hurricane donors to check the charity

DENVER — Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams is praying for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey, and he lauded Coloradans who  have donated to the relief efforts.

But Williams urged contributors to be mindful when making a donation.

“It is important for Coloradans to research the charities they support and trust that their donations are being used prudently,” he said. “To this end, we encourage everyone to use CheckTheCharity.com to learn more about their favorite charities before making donations.”

Here are the tips from Colorado Secretary of State’s to try to avoid charity scams:

    1. Ask for the registration number of the charity and paid solicitor.

    2. Make a note of the individual caller’s first and last name and the name of the telemarketing company that employs the caller.

    3. Ask the solicitor how much of the donation will go to the charity, whether the donation is tax deductible, and what charitable programs it will support.

    4. If solicited in person, ask for the solicitor’s identification and registration number.

    5. Resist pressure to give on the spot, whether from a telemarketer or door-to-door solicitor, and beware if they thank you for making a pledge you don’t remember making. If you feel uncomfortable, just say, “No, thank you.”

    6. Do not pay in cash. Donate by check made payable to the charity or use the charity’s website to donate by credit card.

    7. Make sure you are visiting the official website of the charity you wish to support, and beware of lookalike websites, especially if you are asked to provide personal financial information.

    8. Research the charity’s disclosure and financial statements on the Secretary of State’s website.

    9. Be wary if the charity fails to provide detailed information about its identity, mission, finances and how the donation will be used. Reputable charities will gladly provide the information requested.

    10. Watch out for charities with names that sound similar to well-known organizations. These sound-alike names are intended to confuse.

In Texas, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has established the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, which will be administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation. In addition, Williams urged donors to give to established charities with a physical presence in Texas.

In Colorado, most charities that solicit contributions are required to register with the Secretary of State. The registration filings include information about the organization’s leadership, mission, financial efficiency, and commercial fundraisers. Paid solicitors that raise funds in Colorado also register, and their disclosure forms show the duration and results of any solicitation campaigns conducted.

Colorado residents may also access the state’s annual reports on charitable giving at http://www.sos.state.co.us/pubs/charities/annualReports.html. The reports analyze and illustrate the information reported by registered charities and paid solicitors, most notably the results of the joint solicitation campaigns they conducted during the previous year.

Consumers should report suspected fraudulent charitable solicitations to the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office or the Attorney General’s Office.

    Beware: Phony Medicare Scam

CENTENNIAL — Local law enforcement is asking elderly residents to be aware of a scam involving phony health insurance agency representatives. The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office have received reports of Medicare and Medicaid imposters calling older beneficiaries and threatening to cancel benefits if they don’t pay to renew their health insurance cards.
