  • CSU honored for best social media short video: Journey To Graduation

CSU honored for best social media short video: Journey To Graduation

Colorado State University’s Division of External Relations and the College of Business communications team has received the Shorty Awards Audience Honor for Kevin’s Walk, a story about a CSU student’s journey to graduation that went viral during the 2017 commencement season.

The 10th Annual Shorty Awards, honoring the best of social media, were handed out in New York on April 15. The Shorty Awards recognize individuals and organizations producing great content on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, Snapchat and the rest of the social web.

“Consumers expect more from brands now more than ever before,” said MuckRack CEO Gregory Galant, co-founder of the Shorty Awards. “The most successful brands are taking positions on political and cultural issues, which just a few years ago would have terrified CMOs [chief marketing officers]. Storytelling and social good are still very important to consumers. We noticed that an element of social good was present in a lot of the winning entries. We are celebrating a decade of the Shorty Awards, so it’s been interesting to watch the evolution of campaigns and the ways in which brands communicate with their audience.”

Colorado State University is a back-to-back finalist for the prestigious Shorty Awards. The university’s social and digital media team was named a finalist in 2017 for the #RamGrad commencement campaign.

    Kevin’s Walk

Halfway through working on his MBA degree at Colorado State University, Kevin Hoyt’s world was turned upside down when he fell from the attic in his Utah home on New Year’s Day in 2015, crashing through the ceiling of his living room and landing on the floor nearly 20 feet below. He spent the next month adapting to not being able to use his legs and figuring out how to move forward as a person living with paraplegia. After being certain that he was done with school following the accident, Kevin had a change of heart and decided to re-enroll at Colorado State University and continue his studies online.

“I’ve used the motivation of walking across that stage at graduation to get myself physically to that point,” he said.

With his family watching from the crowd, Hoyt approached the stage in his wheelchair. Rolling to a stop in front of hundreds of cheering onlookers, he slowly rose to his feet as students led a standing ovation. He walked across the stage. After two and a half long years, he’d finally accomplished his goal, and it couldn’t have felt better.

A CSU communications team followed his journey to commencement by creating an interactive documentary and corresponding story. Video of Kevin’s walk across the commencement stage was shared across CSU’s social media channels. The video quickly became a viral sensation, reaching more than 5 million people on social media.

  • 360 Fallen Law Enforcement Officers to be Honored During 30th Annual Candlelight Vigil — May 13

360 Fallen Law Enforcement Officers to be Honored During 30th Annual Candlelight Vigil — May 13

National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund releases list of names of officers being added to the national monument this year

Washington, DC— The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund has released the roll call of names of 360 U.S. law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. These names will be engraved this month and formally dedicated at the 30th annual Candlelight Vigil held on the National Mall, between 4th and 7th streets on Sunday, May 13, at 8:00 p.m.

Included in this list are the names of 129 officers who were killed in the line of duty in 2017 and 231 officers who were killed in prior years but had been forgotten by time until the Memorial Fund’s research staff and a team of dedicated volunteers confirmed record of their law enforcement service.

When the addition of these 360 names is completed, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial will bear the names of 21,541 officers representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, federal law enforcement, and military police agencies—all who have made the ultimate sacrifice in our nation’s history.

The engraving process begins with a lengthy stencil and proofing procedure followed by meticulous engraving and curing processes. Once the engraving and curing process is finished, the covers are removed, and the panel is completed. Names will be engraved on 69 of the Memorial’s 128 panels encompassing the east and west walls.

Each May 13, an estimated 30,000 people assemble for the annual Candlelight Vigil, a signature event of National Police Week when the names of these fallen officers are formally dedicated. Thanks to a partnership with Officer.com, the Vigil is streamed live online so that people across the country can witness this annual tribute to America’s law enforcement officers. Individuals interested in the free webcast can register online at www.UnitedByLight.org.

For the third year in a row, we will come together on the National Mall for an important occasion: to honor the brave lives we lost in the line of duty. A ceremony will never relieve the loss felt by these families, but we gather to show them that they are not alone. The 900,000 officers currently wearing the badge will carry on their responsibility and dedication of protecting our communities. — Craig W. Floyd, Chief Executive Officer of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund

The names of the 360 officers added to the National Memorial this year can be found at www.LawMemorial.org/2018RollCall. For a complete schedule of National Police Week events in Washington, DC, visit www.LawMemorial.org/PoliceWeek.

  • Deputy Works to Get Recognition for the State’s School Crossing Guards

Deputy Works to Get Recognition for the State’s School Crossing Guards

On Wednesday, April 25, the State will recognize Crossing Guard Appreciation Day for the first time, thanks to the work of Deputy Mark Edson, a school resource officer (SRO) for the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Edson has been an SRO for the last six years and works in both Littleton Public Schools and Cherry Creek School District. While working a Safe Routes to School event at a Cherry Creek elementary school a year ago, Deputy Edson realized that there was no local or state recognition for the hard and sometimes dangerous work that school crossing guards engage in on a daily basis.

Seeing a need to recognize these individuals for the important work they perform, and a need for them to be recognized throughout the State of Colorado, Deputy Edson petitioned the Governor’s Office for a State Proclamation. He succeeded and the Governor has proclaimed the last Wednesday in April as Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.

Our School Crossing Guards are on the front lines of ensuring that our children make it to school safely. Each day, rain, snow or shine, they are there to ensure that our kids get across busy streets and intersections, sometimes encountering dangerous or otherwise hostile situations. Deputy Edson will celebrate this first ever recognition with crossing guards at a local elementary school. Please take time to thank the people who keep our children safe each school day.
