  • COLORADO ROCKIES ANNOUNCE AUCTION TO FUND THE FIRST ANNUAL JACKIE ROBINSON FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP FOR A COLORADO STUDENT

COLORADO ROCKIES ANNOUNCE AUCTION TO FUND THE FIRST ANNUAL JACKIE ROBINSON FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP FOR A COLORADO STUDENT

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies announced today that Rockies players have set up an online auction of game-used equipment and jerseys to fund a Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship for a Colorado student, covering four years of their college tuition. This will be the first in an annual initiative, with each year’s recipient being a Jackie Robinson Scholar, and the Colorado Rockies Foundation will ensure that the four-year scholarship is funded in full.

“My teammates and I are very excited to be a part of the great work done by the Jackie Robinson Foundation, it’s an amazing organization,” said Rockies catcher Drew Butera. “Helping minority youth obtain higher education for a better future is something we all felt strongly about and we wanted to help in any way we could.”

“Our hope is that, through this scholarship, we can build a lasting relationship with the student selected,” said Rockies Owner/Chairman and CEO Dick Monfort. “We want to keep in touch with them and their family while they’re attending college, provide meaningful guidance and mentor them as they start planning their careers beyond college. And we look forward to doing the same with the students selected each year going forward. The relationships we develop through this program will far outweigh and outlast the four-year financial commitment.”

The auction is live today at Rockies.com/auctions and will run through Sept. 23.

Among the items up for auction are:

KC Monarchs cleats signed by the 2020 Colorado Rockies

    Nolan Arenado signed bat

    Drew Butera signed chest protector

    Matt Kemp signed bat

    Trevor Story signed bat

    Tony Wolters signed catcher’s helmet

Individual #42 home white jerseys worn and signed by Rockies players

    About the Jackie Robinson Foundation:

The Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF) was founded in 1973 to address the achievement gap in higher education. The Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship Program provides four-year grants and comprehensive support services to highly motivated students of color with strong capabilities and limited financial resources. The foundation provided $6.5 million in scholarship assistance and direct program services for the 2019-2020 academic year, dispersed among 258 JRF Scholars and Extra Innings Fellows as well as 63 Rachel Robinson International Fellows. The Extra Innings Fellowship extends support to help JRF alumni continue their education and earn advanced professional or graduate degrees. The Rachel Robinson International Fellowships provides access and financial support for select JRF Scholars to participate in international work-study and community service, commensurate with JRF’s curriculum that addresses the global workforce. In 2017, JRF added to this program a two-week annual service trip to Africa for each rising sophomore class to ensure that an international experience is part of each JRF Scholar’s college experience.

Denver Parks and Recreation partners with CSU to create a greener Denver

Denver Parks and Recreation and Colorado State University announced Sept. 17 that they have entered into an intergovernmental agreement with the CSU Salazar Center for North American Conservation to support and advance efforts in climate resilience, habitat and equitable access to green space.

The Salazar Center will work closely with park planners and other City and County of Denver departments to identify, share and advance best practices for applying natural solutions, alongside a health equity lens, to reduce the impacts of global warming on the city’s most vulnerable neighborhoods.

“The CSU Salazar Center for North American Conservation shares in our vision to enhance natural systems to improve community health and support climate resilience,” said Happy Haynes, executive director of Denver Parks and Recreation. “We look forward to our partnership and their assistance in providing the research and technical expertise to improve the long-term health and resilience of Denver’s landscapes and people.”

The announcement was made at the Salazar Center’s second International Symposium on Conservation Impact, held virtually this year. Leaders at the symposium highlighted best-in-class examples of North American cities where leaders have used green space and natural solutions to address climate resilience and support racial equity.

“We commend the City of Denver for their leadership on climate action and look forward to working with them to make Mayor Hancock’s vision of a climate resilient, biophilic, and equitable city a reality,” said Colorado State University President Joyce McConnell.

The Salazar Center will engage research faculty from CSU, convene with stakeholders and experts to combine research, partner with city staff, and provide specific recommendations to support and advance the Game Plan for a Healthy City, a commitment to conservation and sustainable practices to support the environmental health of Denver.

  • Pledge to Bike to Wherever Next Week

Pledge to Bike to Wherever Next Week

The Denver region will celebrate cycling virtually September 21-25

September 17, 2020 (Denver, CO) – Bikers around the Denver region plan to ditch their cars next week to participate in Bike to Wherever Week, a virtual event hosted by Way to Go. Bike to Wherever Week, which will take place from September 21-25, is a region-wide celebration of cycling encouraging commuters to opt for a bike over a vehicle – whether it’s to ride to a workplace, the store, the park, or the coffee shop.

The Way to Go team created Bike to Wherever Week as an alternative to Bike to Work Day, which was cancelled earlier this summer due to the unprecedented and evolving impact of the COVID-19 outbreak. Bike to Work Day, which is the second largest event of its kind in the nation, typically attracts more than 30,000 participants to breakfast stations and parties throughout the region.

“While we are disappointed that we won’t be able to host any physical festivities this year, we are excited to host our first virtual biking event,” said Allison Redmon, Way to Go manager. “This is a great way for people to try biking out and see all the benefits it has to offer. Even though we won’t be together in person, we plan on keeping the good times rolling with prizes and social media updates.”

Way to Go has partnered with the Colorado Classic team and the Gates Corporation to get more people on bikes. Anyone who pledges to ride during Bike to Wherever Week will automatically be entered to win a Priority Bicycles Brilliant L Train Bicycle, equipped with a Gates Carbon Drive belt system. There will also be opportunities to participate and win prizes through social media.

Even though Bike to Work Day festivities have been cancelled, the theme of Bike to Wherever remains the same: rejoining the movement. Bike to Wherever is all about reminding people of the fun and freedom of biking, while encouraging those who may have forgotten to dust the bike off and give it a try. It’s easy to get hooked! Survey results show that first-time Bike to Work Day participants are more likely than other riders to continue biking on a regular basis.

Interested folks can find more information and pledge to ride their bikes at biketowherever.org.

  • Gov. Polis Updates Governor’s Dashboard

DENVER — Gov. Jared Polis today launched an updated dashboard with additional features to make the website more accessible and interactive. The Governor first launched the dashboard in July of 2019 to provide transparency and accountability around key goals set by the administration. Since the initial launch, the Governor’s Dashboard has been recognized nationally in 2019  2020 by the Invest in What Works, State Standard of Excellence; highlighting Colorado as the leading state in the country in the category of strategic goal setting.

“I’m excited to launch these new updates to our Dashboard, improving accessibility to the site and increasing transparency with new data visualizations,” said Governor Jared Polis. “I hope that Coloradans will join our administration on our journey to achieve the goals we’ve set for ourselves to create a Colorado where everyone can thrive. Though the pandemic has changed many aspects of our lives, now more than ever, we are committed to continue improving the way we provide quality services.”

Updates on the dashboard include increased ADA accessibility, including making the data visualizations fully compatible with screen readers.

The Fiscal Year (FY) 2020-2021 updates to these visualizations increased the available data to display 264 key performance indicators compared to 71 in 2019. These additional metrics tell a more complete story of how State agencies and working groups are achieving progress on their goals, as well as the Governor’s Bold Four. The FY 2020-2021 Dashboard displays both the Wildly Important Goals (WIGs) and any corresponding lead measures. This allows  users of the site to follow not only the overall goal, but see progress of the work that goes into the achievement of those goals.

The Dashboard provides a summary of progress on goals set around the Governor’s Bold Four initiatives, as well as other high-priority areas. The Bold Four performance areas include Tax Reform & Economic Development, Energy & Renewables, Health, and Education & Workforce.

  • Governor Polis Orders Flags Lowered to Honor Patriot Day, Commemorate 9/11 Anniversary

Governor Polis Orders Flags Lowered to Honor Patriot Day, Commemorate 9/11 Anniversary

DENVER – Gov. Jared Polis today ordered flags to be lowered to half staff on all public buildings statewide on Friday, September 11, 2020 from sunrise to sunset to honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. This is also in recognition of Patriot Day, which was designated by Congress in 2001.

“On September 11, 2001, our country faced a tragedy unlike any we’d seen before. Thousands of innocent people, including many first responders, lost their lives that day. In the aftermath of that terrible attack, our nation came together, and we saw Americans lifting each other up and lending a helping hand. We have shown again and again that what challenges us can make us stronger. It’s the brave men and women who serve and protect our country, and its ideals, that make America who we are today. Let us honor those incredible men and women who lost their lives to terrorism, and renew our efforts to fight terrorism,” said Governor Jared Polis.

See the full presidential proclamation below.

    – – – – – – –

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

     A PROCLAMATION

In 2001, our Nation, united under God, made an unbreakable promise never to forget the nearly 3,000 innocent Americans who were senselessly killed on September 11.  On this sacred day — Patriot Day — we solemnly honor that commitment.  As the bells toll, we call by name those who perished in the terrorist attacks in New York, New York; Arlington, Virginia; and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.  In cities and towns across our great country, we stand in solidarity to remember the victims and mourn their stolen hopes and dreams.

On a day that began as ordinary as any other, terrorists carrying out a sadistic plan murdered thousands of our fellow compatriots.  With shock and disbelief, we watched our first responders, encumbered by heavy equipment and hindered by debris and smoke, rush with conviction and courage into the void to rescue those in despair.  With pride and sorrow, we felt the tremendous bravery of those aboard Flight 93, who summoned the courage to charge the terrorists in a counterattack that saved countless American lives.  As the day closed, America steadied its resolve to hold accountable those who had attacked us and to ensure it would never happen again.

The courage, heroism, and resilience Americans displayed on 9/11, and in its aftermath, are perpetual testaments to the spirit of our country.  While our Nation was anguished by this attack, the grit displayed that day — the very essence of America — was a reminder that our citizens have never failed to rise to the occasion.  Heroes sprang into action in the face of great peril to help save their fellow Americans.  Many laid down their lives.  As we reflect on the events of that September morning, let us recommit to embrace the stalwart bravery displayed and reaffirm our dedication to defending liberty from all who wish to deny it.

To fulfill our collective promise never to forget, we impart the memory of that fateful day to our children and grandchildren.  The smoke that rose from the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the Pennsylvania field carried away the souls of innocent Americans.  As we recall the images of our American Flag raised from the ashes of Ground Zero and the Pentagon, we are reminded that good triumphs over evil.  We recommit ourselves to fortifying our cherished American values so that future generations will know in their souls that the United States is the land of the free and the home of the brave.

This Patriot Day, we commemorate the lives of those who perished on September 11, 2001, we pray for the families who carry on their legacies, and we honor the unmatched bravery of our Nation’s first responders.  We also commend those who, in the days and years following the attack, answered the call to serve our country and continue to risk their lives in defense of the matchless blessings of freedom.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress designated September 11 of each year as “Patriot Day.”

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2020, as Patriot Day.  I call upon all departments, agencies, and instrumentalities of the United States to display the flag of the United States at half-staff on Patriot Day in honor of the innocent people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.  I invite the Governors of the United States and its Territories and interested organizations and individuals to join in this observance.  I call upon the people of the United States to participate in community service in honor of the innocent people we lost that day and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time to honor those victims who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this tenth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-fifth.

    DONALD J. TRUMP
