  • Vaccination clinic event

    Vaccination clinic event

DENVER — Back-to-school time is a busy, but critical, time for parents to get their children up to date on vaccinations. Join Aurora Fire Rescue, the Colorado Children’s Immunization Coalition, Tri-County Health Department, and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment for a Shots for Tots and Teens vaccination clinic from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at Aurora Fire Station No. 2, 12600 Hoffman Blvd. in Aurora.

Shots for Tots and Teens Clinics offers low- and no-cost Saturday vaccination clinics throughout the year in Aurora, Denver, and Arvada. The goal of the program is to ensure children and families — no matter their income or insurance status — receive the vaccines needed to keep them healthy. This particular clinic is held at an Aurora fire station in the heart of the city’s Hoffman Heights neighborhood. The location is ideal for many families who live nearby and need access to convenient and low-cost immunizations. The clinic is popular with children because it’s at a fire station with fire trucks, lights, and sirens!

In addition to these great visuals, vaccination experts from Tri-County Health Department and the Colorado Children’s Immunization Coalition will be on hand to answer your questions, and there may be opportunities to talk directly to parents about why they vaccinate. State elected officials also have been invited to the event.

  • Northeast Region Sportsperson Caucus to be held in Fort Collins on Aug. 14

Northeast Region Sportsperson Caucus to be held in Fort Collins on Aug. 14

DENVER — The Northeast Region Sportsperson Caucus will meet in Fort Collins to discuss a variety of important issues involving hunting, fishing and conservation. Hunters and anglers are invited to attend and meet with their regional delegates at 7 p.m. on Aug. 14 at the Council Tree Library located at 2733 Council Tree Ave.

In a continuing effort to provide hunters and anglers with opportunities to comment about a variety of wildlife management concerns, Colorado Parks and Wildlife formed the Sportsperson Caucus in 2012. The caucus consists of elected and appointed delegates from each of the state’s four wildlife management regions. They meet twice annually at the regional level to collect input from constituents. The input is then presented to Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s leadership at the statewide meetings, also held twice each year.

The agenda for the meeting will be as follows:

    • Update on the 2020-24 Big Game Season Structure
    • Eastern plains rifle deer hunting season
    • Expansion of the Public Access Program by 100,000 acres in time for the fall 2019 hunting season
    • Open forum discussion

In addition to voicing their opinions at regional meetings, members of the public can contact their local representatives directly at any time.

Regional Sportsmen’s Caucus meetings are open to participation by any hunter or angler who has an interest in the region. The meetings can include any number of participants; no active hunter or angler will be excluded from the discussion.

  • Dream Stream cleanup coming on Aug. 10

Dream Stream cleanup coming on Aug. 10

LAKE GEORGE, Colo. — Eleven Mile and Spinney Mountain State Park officials are partnering with Landon Mayer Fly Fishing to host the fourth annual “Clean the Dream” volunteer event on Saturday, Aug. 10 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The volunteer event is focused on cleaning up the Dream Stream, a Gold Medal water on the Charlie Meyers State Wildlife Area that is the section of the South Platte River between Spinney Mountain Reservoir and Elevenmile Reservoir. The Dream Stream is famous for its runs of rainbow and cutthroat trout in the spring and brown trout and kokanee salmon in the fall.

“This is our way of giving back to a river that provides so many anglers such great rewards,” said Park Ranger Kasey McClurg.

CPW is expecting a very large number volunteers from across the country to participate in the event and keep the Gold Medal water pristine.

Participants are asked to meet at the Charlie Meyers State Wildlife Area parking lot off of County Road 59 near the bridge to break into groups to clean the complex.

Thanks to Landon Mayer Fly Fishing and event sponsors, free food and drinks along with raffle prizes will be provided to participants.

No registration is required. For questions, please contact Eleven Mile State Park at 719-748-3401.

  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife Prepares for Operation Dry Water

Colorado Parks and Wildlife Prepares for Operation Dry Water

DENVER, Colo. — As the summer heats up and more people get out on the state’s waterways, boater safety and BUI enforcement are high priorities for Colorado Parks and Wildlife. The agency will be participating in the annual Operation Dry Water heightened awareness and enforcement weekend July 5 – 7, a national effort to encourage safe boating practices on the water.

Though Operation Dry Water is a year-round educational effort, the three-day heightened enforcement is designed to educate boaters and reduce the number of accidents and deaths related to alcohol and drug use on our waterways. The enforcement period is timed to coincide with July 4th weekend celebrations on the water, a holiday known for drinking and boating.

“Boating is a favorite pastime of Coloradans and visitors alike, but we want to make sure that everyone is enjoying their time on the water responsibly,” said Grant Brown, boating safety program manager with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. “Alcohol use is the leading contributing factor in recreational boating deaths. Making the decision to boat under the influence is reckless; boat smart, boat safe, boat sober.”

Operation Dry Water’s mission is to raise awareness among recreational boaters about the dangers and consequences of boating under the influence, which include:

The federal BAC legal limit for operating a vessel under the influence is .08.

Alcohol use can impair a boater’s judgment, balance, vision and reaction time.

If you boat under the influence your voyage may be terminated, the boat may be impounded and the operator may be arrested. Penalties vary by state but can include fines, jail and loss of boating or even driving privileges.

Sun, wind, noise, vibration and motion —“stressors” common to the boating environment— intensify the effects of alcohol, drugs, and some medications.

Alcohol use can increase fatigue and susceptibility to the effects of cold-water immersion.

Alcohol is dangerous for passengers too. Intoxication can cause slips, falls overboard and other dangerous accidents.

If you boat under the influence of drugs or alcohol you are endangering your life and the lives of others.

Operation Dry Water enforcement will include increased patrols, breathalyzer tests, and checkpoints as well as boater education and outreach. However, fellow boaters remain one of the most important tools on the water. If you suspect a boater is under the influence, do not hesitate to contact the authorities to help keep everyone on the water safe from someone’s bad decision.

The dangers of operating under the influence of marijuana are the same as those from alcohol, and the penalties are identical for either substance.  Additionally, many lakes, reservoirs and rivers in Colorado are considered public property, so open display or use of marijuana is illegal and may result in additional consequences.

While out on the water this summer, remember to stay sober and help keep the water a safe and enjoyable place for everyone. Three things to remember from Operation Dry Water before heading out on your boat is to boat sober, always wear a life jacket and take a boating safety course to set yourself up, and everyone around you, for a fun and safe boating experience.

Boaters can take the pledge to boat sober and find more information about boating under the influence at operationdrywater.org. To learn more about boating in Colorado, visit cpw.state.co.us.

  • Training for Armed School Personnel

    Training for Armed School Personnel

Denver, CO — FASTER* Colorado — an organization committed to making our school children as safe as possible— announces its latest training class for armed school staff members. The class will be held June 21, 22, and 23 and will be held in Adams County, CO. The training is organized in partnership with Independence Institute.

FASTER Colorado launched its first training class in 2017, and is currently in its third year of training. FASTER Colorado curriculum includes skills to stop an active killer, as well as tactical medical training to deal with related injuries such as gunshot wounds.

“Colorado law already allows K-12 school staff to carry a concealed firearm on campus, provided they are designated by their school board, or charter school board, as a school security officer. They are also required to obtain proper training,” said Laura Carno, Founder of FASTER Colorado. “Over 150 school staff in Colorado are already so designated. We provide them world-class training in stopping active killers and saving lives.”

The tuition is $1,000 per class member, and scholarships are available. FASTER Colorado is a project of Independence Institute. According to Amy Cooke, Independence Institute’s Executive VP, “We raise scholarship money, because we never want lack of training budget to keep any school personnel from having access to this lifesaving training. We are honored to partner with FASTER Colorado to help save the lives of Colorado’s school children.”

Members of the media may attend portions of the class, and conduct interviews with: FASTER Colorado Founder, Laura Carno, FASTER Colorado’s instructors (all active-duty law enforcement), and Evan Todd (Columbine survivor). At class time, there may be class attendees who are open to interviews. We ask that media not report the names, schools, or images of class attendees without that individual’s express consent.

For more information, please go to FasterColorado.com. For media questions, or to schedule an interview, please contact Laura Carno at either 719-492-0211. Details of the daily schedule and location will be provided to those media with interest in attending.
