Gardner-Backed Legislation to Combat Sex Trafficking Passes Senate

Washington, D.C. – Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) helped pass H.R.1865, the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act. Gardner was a cosponsor of the companion legislation in the Senate, which would clarify existing law that was shielding certain websites and certain individuals that were knowingly facilitating sex trafficking.

This bipartisan legislation gives the victims of these crimes the justice they deserve against the criminals that carry out these dreadful acts. We need to do everything we can to combat sex trafficking and this legislation that will soon be law is a sensible step in the right direction for the victims. — Gardner

The legislation was prompted after Senate investigations of the classifieds/advertisement website backpage.com. Criminals were using the website to post advertisements that led to sex trafficking and prostitution and the website was aware that it was being permitted to happen and did not take appropriate action to stop it. Under current interpretation of existing law, the victims of sex trafficking could seek civil action against the individuals but not against the websites facilitating this action. This legislation would give the victims the opportunity to hold these website or third party facilitators accountable.

Additional information about the legislation can be found here. It passed the House 388-25 on February 27th.

Gardner Hosts South Korean Foreign Minister

Washington, DC – Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy, met with the Republic of Korea’s Foreign Minister, H.E. Kyung-Wha Kang, during her U.S. trip to meet the U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, pictured above.

In his capacity as Subcommittee Chairman, Gardner welcomed the Foreign Minister to the United States and hosted a discussion with several other members of the Foreign Relations Committee.

It was an honor to host a discussion with Minister Kang. We discussed ways to strengthen the U.S.-ROK alliance and the need to work closely together to achieve the complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. In our discussion today it became even more clear that the sanctions legislation I passed are having a significant impact that continues to put pressure on the regime. I thank Minister Kang for graciously accepting the invitation to meet today and look forward to working with her in the future. — Gardner

Senator Gardner has been the leader in the Senate on efforts to bring a peaceful denuclearization to the Korean Peninsula. Gardner is the author of the Leverage to Enhance Effective Diplomacy Act (LEED). This bipartisan legislation requires the President to impose an economic embargo on North Korea and its enablers. Additionally, it requires the President to block any entity or financial institution implicated in any significant trade with North Korea from the U.S. financial system. Gardner is also the author of the North Korea Sanctions Policy and Enhancement Act, signed into law in February of 2016. The legislation marked the first time Congress imposed stand-alone mandatory sanctions on North Korea.

Gardner, Bennet Announce $2 Million TIGER Grant for Ute Mountain Ute Tribe of Colorado

Washington, DC – Senators Cory Gardner (R-CO) and Michael Bennet (D-CO) today announced the Department of Transportation has awarded the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe a $2 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant for a project aimed at improving access and safety along a 2.5-mile segment of US Highway 160.

This is great news for the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe as these Department of Transportation funds will help make critical upgrades on this stretch of highway. Going forward, I’ll continue my efforts to ensure our local communities across Colorado have adequate resources from the federal government and ensure no corner of Colorado is ever forgotten. — Gardner

For over a decade, the Ute Mountain Ute tribe has advocated for this project to modernize the roads in its community. We applaud the tribe’s efforts to secure this grant and commit to working with Southwest Colorado to help further federal investment in our local communities. — Bennet

Gardner Joins CBS This Morning To Discuss North Korea and Trade

Washington, DC – Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity, joined CBS This Morning today to discuss the latest developments on North Korea and trade policy.

    On North Korea:

“In the past, the United States has lived up to our end of the bargain where we’ve entered into promises or agreements with North Korea only to see the North Koreans break their end of the bargain so what this administration needs to continue to do is apply maximum pressure as it has, continue to engage China and other countries around the world to enforce stricter standards and stricter sanctions.”

    On Trade:

“I think he [the President] is right to say we need trade agreements that are fair. What I disagree with, of course, is on the decision to impose a tariff on steel or aluminum, or to withdraw from NAFTA that could actually hurt the American people.”

Bennet Statement on President Trump’s Steel and Aluminum Tariffs

Washington, D.C. – Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet today issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s announcement to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports:

Provoking a global trade war with reckless tweets puts American jobs and businesses at risk and increases costs for American families. We need a thoughtful and aggressive response to China’s overproduction of steel and aluminum, but blanket tariffs are not the answer. The President’s action, motivated by his political whims rather than effective policy, will invite retaliation and isolate us further from our trading partners. — Bennet

Bennet, a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance with jurisdiction over international trade issues, has advocated for balanced and targeted trade policies. In June 2017, he led a letter with Colorado Senator Cory Gardner urging the administration to narrowly tailor tariffs on aluminum imports. Last week, Bennet sent a bipartisan letter to President Trump urging him to lift his 30 percent tariff on imported solar panels and solar cells.

Lights! Camera! Action! New documentary shows how Colorado protects election security

DENVER — Colorado’s risk-limiting audit pioneered a critical process to show the security of elections.  The Colorado Secretary of State’s office documented the monumental effort by state and county election officials last fall when it completed the Nation’s First “Risk-Limiting Audit” to ensure that the counties’ ballot tabulation systems accurately counted the votes cast by Colorado’s electors.

With the concerns about election integrity at the forefront of public consciousness, I’m proud to say that Colorado has an answer. Our paper ballots and groundbreaking risk-limiting audit provides a rock solid confirmation that Colorado’s voting systems are secure. Every Coloradan should have confidence that the election results report the actual votes across the state’s 64 counties. — Secretary Wayne Williams

Colorado’s work in bringing the audit to reality was observed by federal and state election administrators, election integrity advocates, academics and media throughout the country, including Matt Masterson and Thomas Hicks, two of the three members of the presidentially appointed U.S. Election Assistance Commission.

Colorado’s risk-limiting audit provided great insights into how to conduct more efficient and effective post-election audits. — Masterson

The documentary includes praise for the new process from Elizabeth Steele, elections director of Colorado Common Cause, and professors at University of California, Berkeley, Columbia University and Massachusetts Institution of Technology. “The risk-limiting audit is one example of Colorado’s commitment to election integrity.” — Steele

“Colorado is setting a new standard” and “is really putting a marker in the ground that election outcomes should be verified and can be verified,” said Columbia’s Mark Lindeman.

  • Republican Darryl Glenn makes ballot under new petition procedures

Republican Darryl Glenn makes ballot under new petition procedures

DENVER – Secretary of State Wayne Williams announced that Darryl Glenn, who is running for the Republican nomination in Congressional District 5, has successfully petitioned onto the primary ballot.

Glenn, an El Paso County commissioner, submitted his petitions to the Secretary of State’s office on Dec. 28. Here is the signature breakdown after the petitions were reviewed to make sure the voter information was correct and that the signatures matched:

    • Required: 1,000
    • Turned in: 1,739
    • Rejected:  500
    • Accepted: 1,239

Colorado law now allows petitioners a chance to “cure” non-matching signatures and other technical problems. The new cure process gives candidates the ability to fix issues without having to go to court. Judges had much more leeway to accept signatures that the Secretary of State’s office had to reject by law.

Glenn used that new law to fix deficient affidavits turned in by petition circulators. Those affidavits previously had to be reviewed and accepted by a court. The candidate also has been informed that some of his signatures that were rejected could be cured but he has declined that option because he has enough valid signatures to make the ballot.

This is the first time that petition signatures have been checked to make sure they match voter signatures on file.

There are two ways to get on the ballot in Colorado: through the petition process, by collecting valid voter signatures from a certain amount of members of your own party; or going through the caucus system, which begins Tuesday. The primary is June 26.
