  • Vice President Harris to tout COVID relief package in Denver

Vice President Harris to tout COVID relief package in Denver

DENVER (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris will visit Denver on March 16 to highlight the $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill passed by Congress on Wednesday.

Details on the visit by Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were still being worked out, the vice president’s office said.

Harris’ visit is part of an ambitious campaign by President Joe Biden’s administration to showcase the relief bill. The campaign includes travel by the president, first lady Jill Biden and Cabinet secretaries.

Harris’ office said she will address the aid package’s many aspects, among them an extension of $300 weekly emergency unemployment benefits into September and the shoring up of state and local government finances.

The U.S. House gave final congressional approval to the relief package along a near-party-line vote. Republicans opposed the legislation, characterizing it as bloated and crammed with liberal policies.

Biden plans to sign the measure Friday.

  • CHSAA Basketball Playoff Slated for March 13 Postponed

The current forecasts do not present a positive picture for the weather on Saturday, March 13. In the best interests of the safety of those players, coaches and families traveling this weekend, we are postponing all games scheduled for March 13. Those games will be rescheduled to Monday, March 15. Because Monday has become a playoff date, schools may practice on Sunday, March 14, per CHSAA bylaws.

The new schedule will have the Great 8 games playing March 15 and the semifinal games on March 17. This still allows for a travel day between games.

Knowing that the potential for significant snowfall is imminent, we will continue to monitor the impact of the storm in the event an additional postponement is needed. Should that be necessary, we will play Great 8 on Tuesday, March 16, but still have the semifinal games on March 17.

The state championship games remain scheduled for March 19 and 20 at The Broadmoor World Arena.

  • E-470 Announces Opening of High Plains Trail Extension

E-470 Announces Opening of High Plains Trail Extension

Six-Mile Bike, Pedestrian Trail Extension Important Part of Road Widening Project

Aurora, CO: Bikers, walkers and rollers can rejoice in E-470’s announcement of the completion of the extension of the High Plains Trail. Running along the west side of the highway from Quincy Avenue to Stephen D. Hogan Pkwy., the six-mile extension of the High Plains Trail is the continuation of a multi-year phased approach to build an east metro regional trail network. This announcement comes just weeks after E-470 completed a road widening project that expanded the highway adding a third lane in both directions from Quincy Avenue to I-70.

The expanded trail provides a connection to five neighborhoods in the region and features a 10-foot-wide concrete path in addition to two-foot-wide shoulders, providing ample paved space for pedestrians and bikers.

“The expansion of the High Plains Trail represents E-470’s commitment to supporting our member jurisdictions and local communities through access to multi-modal transportation options,” said E-470 Executive Director Tim Stewart. “We value the many partners that support the expansion of this regional trail network, and look forward to seeing future expansion of the trail continue to connect communities in the region.”

Safety was a top priority for the expansion of the trail. Features include three grade-separated crossings at Hampden Avenue, Jewell Avenue and CO 30, along with one at-grade crossing at Quincy Ave. Environmental and floodplain considerations were also incorporated into the final selection of the trail alignment.

The Authority partnered with Arapahoe Parks and Recreation District to route the trail through the future Country Park just north of Quincy Avenue to improve the trail user experience. The City of Aurora will maintain the trail.

Additional tie-in and connectivity for the trail is being explored by local jurisdictions and stakeholders including the Town of Parker, Aurora and Arapahoe County, with the ultimate goal of connecting to the existing Cherry Creek Trail west of Parker Rd. Future E-470 road widening activities north of I-70 will incorporate additional extension of this east metro regional trail network.

  • Colorado Missing Persons Day—February 4, 2021

Although Colorado’s Missing Persons Day will look a little different this year, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will honor more than *600 individuals currently missing for more than a year in the State of Colorado.  This year, the CBI invites families to visit the Bureau’s website to view a short video from both members of the Colorado Legislature and the CBI to remember those missing and their families.

The names of those currently missing in our state for more than one year, as well as a copy of the Resolution can be found on the CBI website.  Due to the virtual nature of this year’s event, the CBI invites family members and friends to share a short tribute about their loved one on the Colorado Missing Persons Day Memoriam page created in their honor.  www.forevermissed.com/coloradomissingpersonsday

“The pandemic has impacted our plans for this year’s Colorado Missing Persons Day, and I’m deeply disappointed that we cannot host this event at the Capitol to honor the missing and to recognize the devastating journey their families have endured,” said CBI Director John Camper. “While we cannot gather in person, it’s important to remember that we at the CBI never forget the struggles of the families of the missing. Marshalling our resources and those of our partner agencies to seek new leads is a top priority to shed new light on these critical cases.”

Colorado’s Missing Persons Day is being sponsored by the offices of Colorado State Senators Jerry Sonnenberg and Rhonda Fields.

Knowing the devastating impact for the family members of the missing, CBI victim advocates are available for any family members needing a little extra support during this time. Please call (303) 239-4649 or email a CBI victim advocate.

*There are a total of 1,300 missing persons in Colorado as of January 31, 2021.
