  • Moose attack outside Nederland prompts warnings of potential aggressive wildlife behavior defending their young

Moose attack outside Nederland prompts warnings of potential aggressive wildlife behavior defending their young

NEDERLAND — A 69-year-old man was attacked by a cow moose while working on a ranch Thursday morning and was transported by ambulance to Boulder Community Hospital for examination of his injuries.

The incident occurred on private property outside of the town of Nederland. The man was doing property work near thick willow brush when the cow (female) moose attacked him.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers surveyed the property and found a cow moose still in the area and witnesses report seeing her with a calf recently, likely prompting the defensive and aggressive behavior. A dog was also present at the scene of the attack.

No action will be taken against the moose because this incident occurred outside of town on private property, the moose was in its natural habitat and likely a result of seasonal behavior being very protective of its young.

Although this incident was not believed to be sparked by irresponsible behavior, it does serve as an example that wildlife are just that, wild, and they can act in unpredictable ways. CPW reminds the public to respect wildlife and their space.

“It serves as a good reminder that not only moose, but elk and deer are also having babies right now, and does and cows can be aggressive when their fawns and calves are newborn and very vulnerable to predation,” said Area Wildlife Manager Kristin Cannon. “They may be aggressive towards people, but especially people with dogs, and especially if those dogs are off leash.”

Many birds and mammals give birth this time of the year. Now through the end of the month, newborn wildlife will be found across the landscape and it is important that when they are observed, that people do so from a distance and never try to interact with them.

Having dogs off leash often escalates run-ins with wildlife from just a sighting into what could be a dangerous situation.

“As people are recreating for the next three or four weeks, they should be keeping their dogs on a leash or leaving them at home,” Cannon said. “They should be aware of their surroundings and should give all wildlife plenty of space.”

One way to avoid an unnecessary run-in with a moose is to steer clear of thick willow habitat in riparian areas where they are likely to be found eating or resting. Their calves, who are born at the end of May and early June, are often lying in the willows while their mother is off grazing. Calves are usually weaned off a mothers milk after a couple months.

Last fall in response to a growing concern over an increase in moose and human interactions, CPW released a new video illustrating how people can be safe and responsible around these giant mammals.

The video is available on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6Qj9K_eJJE&t=2s

  • Aggressive bear believed to have attacked woman in Monday morning attack killed by wildlife officers

Aggressive bear believed to have attacked woman in Monday morning attack killed by wildlife officers

ASPEN, Colo. – Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers and personnel with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services tracked and killed an aggressive bear believed to have been responsible for attacking a female hiker near Aspen Monday morning.

At approximately 8:30 this morning, witnesses reported seeing a bear in the proximity of the Hunter Creek trailhead that closely matched the description of the one involved in the attack.

After following the bear’s trail during the morning, officers killed it on Highway 82 near the intersection of McSkimming Road just before 1 p.m. this afternoon.

CPW officers will transport the carcass to the agency’s Wildlife Health Laboratory for a full necropsy, then to a laboratory in Wyoming for DNA testing.

By policy and to protect human health and safety, CPW officers are required to euthanize any wild animal that has injured a human, regardless of the circumstances. Relocation is not an option due to the agency’s dangerous bear policy and concerns the bear would resume its aggressive behavior in its new territory.

CSU System selects final architect for new campus at the National Western Center redevelopment: Anderson Mason Dale Architects to design food and agriculture building

Denver, Colo. – The Colorado State University System has selected Colorado-based design firm Anderson Mason Dale Architects (AMD) to complete the CSU Center for Food and Agriculture, one of three buildings comprising the future CSU Campus at the National Western Center redevelopment.

The CSU Center for Food and Agriculture will provide compelling public spaces, experiential learning opportunities and impactful research in food systems, furthering CSU’s mission as part of the National Western Center redevelopment to be a global leader in the intersection of food, water, and health. Part of that mission involves K-12 education, interactive learning opportunities for families, cutting-edge research, and authentic community outreach. The CSU System will break ground on its three-building campus in 2020 and expects to complete the project in 2022.

“Our focus at the National Western Center is to create spaces for every visitor to find inspiration and learn,” said Amy Parsons, Executive Vice Chancellor of the CSU System. “CSU will flip the traditional university model on its head to create a new global model for higher education, for research and experiences. Drawing students, tourists, families, and thought-leaders together to explore, discover, and work to solve the most pressing global problems of our time around water, food, sustainability, and health.”

Anderson Mason Dale Architects joins other companies CSU has hired, including project manager: CAA ICON; project architects: SmithGroup; Hord Coplan Macht; and general manager/construction: JE Dunn Construction.

The project is a singular opportunity for the Colorado State University System to make its mark on Denver, said David Pfeifer, principal at AMD.

“CSU will lead the transformation of the NWC campus as a national destination and global resource in food, energy and water systems education, research, and community outreach, said Pfeifer. “We are honored to collaborate with and support CSU’s faculty, students and leadership team in this exciting effort to bring to life an authentic place for the CSU System on the new campus through the design of this signature building.”

  • Arrest of Chad Disher

    Arrest of Chad Disher

Members of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office report the arrest of Chad Disher, 30, of Hilltop Drive, Adams County.

On May 9th, 2019 at approximately 10:40 a.m., Deputies responded to a report of a female being forced into a vehicle in the area of East 120th Avenue and Brighton Road. Deputies located the vehicle involved, a beige Toyota SUV that was later determined to be a stolen vehicle, and observed a female seated on the shoulder of the roadway. The Deputy exited his patrol vehicle and approached the vehicle and the vehicle attempted to strike the Deputy. The Deputy returned to his patrol unit to pursue the Toyota SUV. The Toyota SUV then subsequently “rammed” the patrol unit and fled. Deputies pursued the vehicle to the area of East 120th Avenue and Jasmine Street. The pursuit was terminated at this time due to snowy conditions and high speeds. However, Thornton Police observed the vehicle strike a utility pole in the area of 120th Avenue and Northhaven Circle. The suspect, Chad Disher, was observed running from the vehicle. The suspect ran through a residential area and church playground but was intercepted by Deputies and taken into custody. Adams County Sheriff’s Office Detectives responded to the scene and subsequently charged Disher with the following: Chad Disher, 30, Hilltop Drive, Adams County, CO.

    1. Aggravated Assault 1st degree (felony)

    2. Aggravated Assault 2nd degree (felony)

    3. Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft (felony)

    4. Criminal Mischief (felony) 5. Vehicular Eluding (felony)

    6. Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (misdemeanor)

The female involved in the incident was secured and interviewed by Detectives. The Deputy operating the patrol unit that was struck was evaluated at the scene by EMS and no injuries are reported at this time. The investigation is ongoing and further charges may be forthcoming. The defendant is being treated for injuries sustained in the accident and will be held at the Adams County Detention Facility pending court proceedings.

  • State Fire Agency Statement on Wildfire Community Preparedness Day

State Fire Agency Statement on Wildfire Community Preparedness Day

Denver, CO– Today, on Wildfire Community Preparedness Day, the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) would like to highlight the importance of wildfire prevention and preparedness. “We want to remind residents of the dangers posed by wildfires and the simple steps that should be followed to prepare for and prevent wildfires,” said DFPC Director Mike Morgan

Despite getting some much-needed snow this winter, we’re not out of the woods yet. Community members can promote wildfire safety by working together on community projects thus reducing the risks of their homes and property becoming fuel for a wildfire.

“Reducing losses from wildfires is a shared responsibility among emergency managers, response agencies and local community members,” said Director Morgan. “Through educational, individual and group activities, residents can learn more about the importance of wildfire preparedness and the power of prevention”.

  • Governor Polis and Secretary of State Griswold announce March 3rd, 2020 as Colorado’s new presidential primary date

Governor Polis and Secretary of State Griswold announce March 3rd, 2020 as Colorado’s new presidential primary date

DENVER — Today Governor Jared Polis and Secretary of State Jena Griswold announced March 3rd, 2020 as the new date for Colorado’s presidential primary. The two were joined by leaders from the Democratic, Republican, Unity American Constitution and Approval Voting parties.

“Our Super Tuesday primaries will be a tremendous opportunity to participate in democracy and for Coloradans to have their voices heard by presidential candidates in all parties,” said Governor Jared Polis. “We are proud of 2018’s record turnout, as well as Colorado’s status as a leader on voting rights. We hope to build on that momentum by participating in a primary along with other Super Tuesday states to ensure that all major candidates listen firsthand to the concerns of Colorado voters.”

In 2016, Colorado voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 107, which restored primary elections in Colorado in presidential election years. The state was previously using the caucus system.

“I am excited to join Governor Polis in officially setting March 3, 2020 — Super Tuesday — as the date for Colorado’s 2020 presidential primary. This will be the first presidential primary in Colorado in 20 years — and the first where unaffiliated voters will be able to participate,” said Secretary of State Jena Griswold. “As Colorado’s Secretary of State, I believe in the power of our democracy. A secure and accessible presidential primary will give Coloradans the opportunity to create the future we imagine.”

CPW invites anglers to discuss key fishing related issues at a public meeting

DENVER – Colorado Parks and Wildlife is looking to involve the public in an interactive conversation and invites anglers to participate in a public meeting on May 16 at the Chilson Recreation Center in Loveland, 700 E 4th St., from 6-8:30 p.m.

Topics of the meeting will include resource-related issues, the status of leases at select reservoirs, as well as key fishing issues and initiatives, in Northeastern Colorado.

The public meeting will allow interested parties the opportunity to learn more about the status of pertinent reservoir leases as well as the chance to discuss fishing related issues. The meeting will begin with a presentation from CPW staff, followed by an open house question and answer opportunity where anglers will be able to discuss key topics with CPW aquatic biologists.

“This is an opportunity to hear directly from our anglers about the issues that are important to them,” said Jeff Spohn, senior aquatic biologist with CPW. “We are looking forward to providing people the chance to ask specific questions about fishing issues and reservoir leases in Northeastern Colorado, and to get answers directly from our aquatic biologists.”

  • Secretary Griswold Releases Quarterly Economic Indicators Report

Secretary Griswold Releases Quarterly Economic Indicators Report

Colorado’s business entity filings and job growth are on the rise, according to the latest Quarterly Business and Economic Indicators report released by Secretary of State Jena Griswold today.

During the first quarter of 2019, 35,838 new business entities were filed with the Secretary of State’s office, contributing to a 5% increase over the past 12 months. There were 159,746 business renewals, which is more than a 7.6% increase over the prior year. There are over 718,000 Colorado businesses in good standing, a record for Colorado.

The Business Research Division at the University of Colorado Leeds School of Business compiles the report using data from the Secretary of State’s central business registry. The report looks at a variety of factors, such as energy costs, the labor market, and inflation.

“I am encouraged by the gains in existing entity renewals and continued gains in new business formations, which have led to a record number of Colorado businesses in good standing,” said Griswold. “This indicates that the business environment in Colorado remains stable, and we are well-positioned to maintain our status as one of the leading state economies nationally.”

From March of 2018 to March of 2019, Colorado added 44,800 jobs. Employment growth is projected to continue to grow over the next two quarters of this year. Data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis shows that Colorado personal income increased by 1.5%, totaling nearly $331 billion.

“Annual growth in filings aligns well with the overall growth we continue to see in the Colorado economy,” said Richard Wobbekind, executive director of the Business Research Division at University of Colorado Leeds School of Business. “As well, the slowing growth of new filings registered in Q1 is consistent with other slowing economic variables.”

Last quarter, business leaders expressed confidence looking ahead two quarters. This increased slightly after the growth in business entity filings, renewals, and employment all went up over the first quarter of 2019.
