National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund releases list of names of officers being added to the national monument this year
Washington, DC— The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund has released the roll call of names of 360 U.S. law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. These names will be engraved this month and formally dedicated at the 30th annual Candlelight Vigil held on the National Mall, between 4th and 7th streets on Sunday, May 13, at 8:00 p.m.
Included in this list are the names of 129 officers who were killed in the line of duty in 2017 and 231 officers who were killed in prior years but had been forgotten by time until the Memorial Fund’s research staff and a team of dedicated volunteers confirmed record of their law enforcement service.
When the addition of these 360 names is completed, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial will bear the names of 21,541 officers representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, federal law enforcement, and military police agencies—all who have made the ultimate sacrifice in our nation’s history.
The engraving process begins with a lengthy stencil and proofing procedure followed by meticulous engraving and curing processes. Once the engraving and curing process is finished, the covers are removed, and the panel is completed. Names will be engraved on 69 of the Memorial’s 128 panels encompassing the east and west walls.
Each May 13, an estimated 30,000 people assemble for the annual Candlelight Vigil, a signature event of National Police Week when the names of these fallen officers are formally dedicated. Thanks to a partnership with Officer.com, the Vigil is streamed live online so that people across the country can witness this annual tribute to America’s law enforcement officers. Individuals interested in the free webcast can register online at www.UnitedByLight.org.
For the third year in a row, we will come together on the National Mall for an important occasion: to honor the brave lives we lost in the line of duty. A ceremony will never relieve the loss felt by these families, but we gather to show them that they are not alone. The 900,000 officers currently wearing the badge will carry on their responsibility and dedication of protecting our communities. — Craig W. Floyd, Chief Executive Officer of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund
The names of the 360 officers added to the National Memorial this year can be found at www.LawMemorial.org/2018RollCall. For a complete schedule of National Police Week events in Washington, DC, visit www.LawMemorial.org/PoliceWeek.

On Wednesday, April 25, the State will recognize Crossing Guard Appreciation Day for the first time, thanks to the work of Deputy Mark Edson, a school resource officer (SRO) for the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Edson has been an SRO for the last six years and works in both Littleton Public Schools and Cherry Creek School District. While working a Safe Routes to School event at a Cherry Creek elementary school a year ago, Deputy Edson realized that there was no local or state recognition for the hard and sometimes dangerous work that school crossing guards engage in on a daily basis. Seeing a need to recognize these individuals for the important work they perform, and a need for them to be recognized throughout the State of Colorado, Deputy Edson petitioned the Governor’s Office for a State Proclamation. He succeeded and the Governor has proclaimed the last Wednesday in April as Crossing Guard Appreciation Day. Our School Crossing Guards are on the front lines of ensuring that our children make it to school safely. Each day, rain, snow or shine, they are there to ensure that our kids get across busy streets and intersections, sometimes encountering dangerous or otherwise hostile situations. Deputy Edson will celebrate this first ever recognition with crossing guards at a local elementary school. Please take time to thank the people who keep our children safe each school day. |
The James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital welcomes our community to the 39th annual Open House from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 21. Organized by students in Colorado State University’s Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program, the free Open House features hospital tours, educational talks and demonstrations, kids’ activities, a petting zoo – as well as food trucks, and visits with CAM the Ram.
Teddy Bear Clinic: children can bring a stuffed animal in for “surgery.” Students in the surgery club will will actually cut and stitch a heart into stuffed animals, so parents might want to bring an old stuffed animal or a new one just for this purpose. There will be bandaging and other options for kids who don’t want Mr. Snuggles to have an incision.
Walk with a Doc and a Dog: Take a stroll with our veterinary cancer specialists Dr. Doug Thamm and Dr. Kristen Weishaar. The group will meet at 9 a.m. at the main (west-facing) entrance of the Diagnostic Medical Center, just north of the hospital. Dogs are welcome on the walk, but are not allowed into the Open House activities, for their own safety and that of others. Learn more about this monthly activity on the CSU Walk with a Doc and a Dog Facebook page.
The Colorado, an epic film about North America’s wildest river, will have its Colorado premiere at Colorado State University on Saturday, April 21. The screening takes place in the Lory Student Center Theater, at 4:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public; seating is on a first-come, first-served basis and doors open at 4 p.m.
The screening is presented by the CSU Water Archives as part of the Morgan Library’s Evening with an Author Series.
The film’s director, co-writer and cinematographer, Murat Eyuboglu, and the author of the film’s companion book, Christa Sadler, will be present at the screening. A Q&A session as well as book signing will take place following the screening.
Narrated by stage legend and Oscar winner Mark Rylance, the film ranges broadly over the history of the Colorado River and the lands it drains, touching on such topics as the earliest settlements in the region; European and Anglo-American explorations in the 18th and 19th centuries; the dam-building era and its consequences; agriculture and immigration; the impact of climate change on the region; and the fate of the river’s delta in Mexico.
The film covers a vast geographical region, from the high mountains of Colorado and Wyoming to the delta in Mexico, and was filmed by Eyuboglu and three-time Emmy-laureate filmmaker Sylvestre Campe over a period of four years.
The film, which also features a critically acclaimed soundtrack, debuted at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in May 2016.
The Colorado is produced by National Sawdust. This screening is supported by Friends of the Morgan Library, Poudre River Public Library, Poudre River Friends of the Library, Old Firehouse Books, CSU Water Archives, Liggett Family Endowment, and KUNC-FM.
