Prescribed Burning Planned at Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge
COMMERCE CITY — Weather permitting, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) will be conducting prescribed burning activities on the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge beginning Tuesday, October 4th. The Service plans to burn up to 564 acres over the next 2-3 weeks. The burns will be conducted between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Smoke will be visible for several miles from the perimeter of the Refuge and people in the area may smell smoke. The purpose of the burns is to reinvigorate the growth of native prairie vegetation, reduce accumulated litter, manage efforts for weed control and improve habitat to sustain wildlife. Prescribed burns are also an important tool land managers use to reduce the risk of wildfire in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI).
Interagency fire crews from the Service, local fire departments and other federal agencies will be participating in the prescribed burns. Safety is our number one priority and every burn is carefully planned to insure the safety of the surrounding community, the public and the firefighters.
Prescribed fire smoke may affect your health. For more information see https://www.colorado.gov/

Colorado State Patrol Seeks Public Assistance in Locating Possible Hit and Run Driver in Fatal Crash in Larimer County
The Colorado State Patrol requests the assistance of the public in locating a vehicle and its driver who possibly struck a bicyclist near the entrance to Carter Lake in Larimer County on Tuesday evening.
On Tuesday, September 20th at approximately 7:20 p.m. Colorado State Troopers responded to a fatal crash involving a bicycle and two other vehicles on Larimer County Road 8E in the area of Carter Lake and the entrance to the Berthoud water treatment plant.
An unknown white sedan or small SUV was eastbound on LCR 8E passing a bicycle who was also eastbound. As the sedan or SUV passed the bicycle it is believed that the vehicle may have made contact with the bicycle causing the rider of the bicycle to lose control and fall into the roadway. After falling off of the bicycle the rider tumbled into the westbound lane of LCR 8E and was struck by a westbound vehicle, a 1994 Chevy Pickup. The Chevy Pickup remained on scene following the collision.
The rider of the bicycle, Jason Holden, a 43 year old male of Berthoud died on scene.
The driver of the Chevrolet Pickup was Robert Conde, a 49 year old male of Loveland was uninjured.
If you have any details that may assist the Colorado State Patrol in locating the small white sedan or SUV or its driver please call CSP dispatch at 303-239-4501.
The crash remains under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol.
